Latency in plain English
Ping measures how long a small request takes to travel to a server and back. It is measured in milliseconds. Lower latency makes interactive services feel more immediate.
What affects ping?
Physical distance, routing, congestion, Wi-Fi interference and overloaded equipment can all add delay. Selecting a test server nearby generally produces a lower result than selecting one on another continent.
Good ping values
Under 20 ms is excellent for many uses, 20–50 ms is generally responsive, and higher values may become noticeable in fast-paced games or real-time communication.
